Help on buying what kind of bike?

i’ve been pondering for almost 3 months now on what kind of bike i should buy. road or mountain?
my school is up on the hill and i plan to take the bus going up, since i dont have have the strength biking up hill yet, and ride my bike down the hill going home. i was thinking mountain bike is better, is it a good choice for safety’s sake?

and also what are the good brands out there other than schwinn?

how big is your bed room and whats in it???
i know you dont want to hear me talk…but im typing so you can’t!!…any who my room has a bunk bed, a computer and computer desk, desk (non-computer), small shelf thing, dresser, three mountain bikes, some De-Walt tools, some amunition, a dog kennel, a hamper, me, my sister, and a dog, and my dogs stuff like toys ect. and clothes and stuff….o and a closet….so you dont have to ask my room IS huge, and the de-walt tools are my dids he bowered them from his work or somthing and my room had room so…and the amunition is my dads he is selling them…and with all that my room is still huge!!! not two huge but still big….it even has a door…that my beds in front of cuz if it wasn’t it was going to be blocked off

and my sis and me are both girls my dogs is boy (thought id share)….if you forgot the question scroll all the way to the top..lol
oh and two BB guns and my guitar
but you know mostly IM in MY room…the stuff is there…and other people and animals and stuff…BUT MOSTLY ME

Kid’s bike or Woman’s bike?

I’m a very short woman, 5′2″. I was using a girls mountain bike, but I was in an accident and it is totaled.

I was wondering if it would be better to buy a woman’s bike. What are the differences, other than height? Do they even make woman’s bikes small enough for me?

I was at Wal-mart the other day and I finally convinced the sales assoc. to let me test ride the bike but it was too tall and he wouldn’t adjust the seat. I looked at the suggested heights for kids bikes and I’m right on the cusp for 24″ bikes.
I never intended to buy a bike at wal-mart. I just wanted to see if I would fit on a woman’s bike.

what would you do, in this situation.?

Well im a new kid at school and im in 10 grade in 9 grade i have completed 11 grade American history with an A plus, and made all As in all my advanced classes, well all as and one b. so when i moved again my academic credits was taken another bad blow and i have to take 9 grade all over again in one semester and the other semester i have to take a whole year of 10 grade. so i am new to macon and im a nice girl im kind and i help out strangers, i am even starting to volunteer at the food drive and i want to give blood.
well no one i mean no one talked to me, i said hi and they just stared at me. i tried helping and praticipating in class and i look very friendlyy and warm even though im upset due to me having to take over classes i already passed. and guess what i get, laughed at in 4 period 9 grade history ( ironic eh) well i was just doing my work and studing when i over heard some boys and 1 girl talking about me, i heard shes ugly and then this one hit me really hard he said look at her chin and the girl busted out laughing, my chin has a scar on it, because times were rough we couldnt afford medical insurance for stitches when i fell while mountain biking and i busted my chin, and it took 3 weeks of painful home medical care to get it to heal and so now its a hyperactive scar and it sticks out, and im really self conscious about it. Then i heard the girl say is she stupid and i immediately thought of my being in 9 grade instead of 10 grade. and then they were laughing at my clothes and stuff, but we could afford anything else we spent most of our clothes money on our mom’s education so she can become a histotechnologist, and my dad can be a pyscologist ( he works on the night shift) and so i was thinking during that whole class maybe thats why im being ignored in all my classes, im just too ugly, maybe thats why i never had a boyfriend im too ugly, and my scar made it worse, i felt upset, but i dint cry i just felt really down and sad. i dont know whats wrong with me i already thought i was sorta pretty but now its a different story, i dont like my school, so i need beauty tips, i dont wear make up, but i guess thats what i need now huh.

How are bikes stolen at a high school?

I’m going to be parking my bike at a highschool. I will never leave it unattended overnight, but the bike will be there about 30 minutes after many students have left. Of course, there will be teachers roaming around the parking lot aswell as security guards, so I think they would help stop, or at least deter theives.

I will be locking my bike in this fashion: A good u-lock (Kryptonite Evolution or Kryptolok series 2) around my back wheel and frame securing it to the bike rack, and a cheap cable lock to secure my front wheel and saddle to the frame.

How do high school theives steal bikes? If they want to steal my bike, they will need a car jack and boltcutters, and they will also need to spend a good deal of time, probably 10-15 minutes stealing my bike. I don’t think they would do that, they would rather steal the bikes protected with a crappy cable lock.

The cable lock around my saddle and front wheel (and anchored to the frame) would prevent the opportunity for some random jackass to steal them for fun, right?

Are highschool thieves even smart enough to know what brand Giant is? Do they even care? My bike has no shock absorbers, and it doesn’t look ‘cool’ to the average highschool joe. Are highschoolers stupid enough to rather steal a ‘cooler looking’ huffy or NEXT, just because it has shocks? My bike is an FCR3, a very nice bike fore smart people, a terrible ‘uncool’ bike for the average kid who still thinks he needs full suspension on the road. Its not a ‘cool’ mountain bike or a ‘cool’ BMX bikes, and those are the bikes stupid people probably think are better for commuting to school. I don’t mean any offense to any mountain bikes or BMX riders; I just watched the dew tour and the BMX stuff was snazzy, and mountain biking looks dangerous and exiciting. I’m just saying, people shoudn’t commute to school on their BMX and mountain bikes, but on a nice hybrid or roadie.

How to convince my parents to let me buy a dirt for 16 th birthday bike and should I be allowed it?

I’m 15 turning 16 in little under 2 weeks and I have been asking my parents for permission (buy everything with own my money) to buy a dirt bike for about a month with only being able to convince my dad. What I don’t understand is why I’m not aloud when she sees me as a responsible son. Should I be allowed one and if so is there anyway to convince her or do you think I should not have one and why.

I go on my mountain bike often and am very confident on it, I have done it once at a 5 day school trip (as well as quad biking, which is more dangerous), I am willing to pay for the bike, safety equipment and cost of going on a track, I have means of transporting the bike to the 5 available sites, I get top grades and she has offered my little sister who is 12 to do horse riding which is a lot more dangerous plus i’m 5′10 70kg and ill only be using at 110cc bike.

Ladies – guys in gym wearing spandex/lycra, do you care?

This mainly for the ladies, but will welcome all answers.

Im a straight guy and have only just started doing cycling/RPM classes at the gym. I did my research on the class, what to expect, how to ride with comfort, stretches etc, but when it came to clothing, I had a lot of mixed results. My research took a turn towards cycling garments, what, when and where to wear spandex if you should wear any at all to the gym or any other location. In girls it’s considered perfectly normal attire. But on guys its a taboo subject which gets a lot of “con’s” more than “pro’s”. Now I’m not talking about the typical Lycra tights/bike shorts you see people use for everyday wear, Im talking about proper padded spandex wear that cyclists use and general compression tights used for recovery purposes. I actually went for the first time to my spin class wearing my lycra padded cycling shorts and a t-shirt ‘just’ long enough to cover my crotch and half my butt. I got this T-shirt a little bigger for that reason alone,

The reason why I bought the shorts was for the padding and comfort alone I would receive and the reading/research I have been doing here, not for any sick self gratification or reason to freak out other gym members. I have heard from experienced cyclist members here that for comfort, reduction in heat, reduction of chaffing and other hygienic reasons, quality padded cycling shorts are recommended but not the be all and end all and there are other alternatives. I looked at the alternatives. There were mountain bike shorts with similar internal linings that did pretty much the same thing as the spandex pair. I seriously considered buying these but found the high price for them was very off putting. Now out of these reasons above I thought ‘well why shouldn’t I be comfortable’ and bought my first good quality pair of lycra shorts.

I headed straight for the back of the room where I was least noticed as it was a new experience for me. I was the only dude in the class wearing padded lycra shorts other than the male instructor. There were a couple of other girls wearing regular capri stile tights, but that was it. All the other guys were wearing regular shorts and during the class they looked a bit uncomfortable after half and hour of up and down hard peddling. No one gave me strange looks of disapproval or any sly comments I could hear which was good, but it made me think, am I making others feel ‘uncomfortable’? Is it wrong to want to feel comfortable even though I may look like a little strange or be considered ‘weird’? Frankly I didnt care what anyone thought of me although I didnt want to ‘parade’ around, hence me bee lining it towards the back of the room. I didnt know anyone there and they didnt know me. I felt good after the session was over. I just did my thing and got changed and went home.

Now to the point of this thread. I guess Im asking for personal opinions/experiences based on what you have read/seen above as well as the answers to the questions that follow:

Do you you mind or care if a guy wore spandex/lycra bike shorts to a cycle/spinning class at the gym?
Is there an etiquette to wearing spandex for both guys and girls?
Should spandex on guys be restricted to cycling only, or only in competition?

If you can be constructive in your comments, Id really appreciate it. I hope I can change my thinking if Im off track somewhere.

My oldest son is now 5 and ready to go on some more serious bike rides. I’ve already picked out a bike trailer for our younger son but I’m finding it a lot more difficult to pick out a bike that I would like because i can’t even figure out which kind I want! Because we will have the trailer and a 5 year old, I don’t see us attempting any difficult trails so I’ve crossed mountain bikes off my list, but cruisers, comforts and hybrids all seem to have their merits. Which is best for me?
1) No serious trail rides.
2) Pulling a 30 lb bike trailer with up to 100 lbs worth of kids
3) Mostly side walk riding with occassional state park paths, etc
4) Possible commuting to the grocery store
5) Possible riding on the beach
6) Using on day trips to explore new places, so could be riding them all day
7) Mostly using on flat surfaces with an occassional causeway

i don’t know what to get my family for christmas i need to get something for my mom dad and brother

my brother is and outdoors person he loves rock climbing bmx riding skateboarding and mountain biking. He is also into dubstep music and d.j ing. He is really particular about what he wears so clothes aren’t really an option, he’s 14 so what can you do.

my mom is really particular about clothes too (she is larger) she won’t where makeup and likes to shop at the thrift store (i don’t have a clue why were not poor at all). she likes to bake and walk other then that all she does is clean all day

my dad is into every thing bikes, EVERYTHING. he is constantly winning some competition so he must be good. He likes good books but only good book like the girl with the dragon tattoo, he read stephen hawking so maybe he’d like something similar. He also enjoys barbecuing work and spinnervals dvds.

I’m on a students budget so i can’t spend more then 50$ a present.

I have 300 dollars to spend on a mountain bike. What should I look for?

I used to race BMX and Mountain Bikes competitively when I was a kid but it has been years since biking. I recently was given a free Murray bike which is about the heaviest and junkiest bike I have ever ridden on. I used to ride Cannondale and Trek. Unfortunately with 300 dollars I know I am very limited for my selection.

What, if anything can I get for 300 dollars or less that would be a decent bike? I ran across a gentleman selling a 2005 GT mountain bike with cyclops trainer and road tires/accessories (odometer, etc) in a package deal for 250. Good hydration pack and gloves for mountain biking.?

I have been mountain biking for quite a while and it is a big hobby of mine. I had a great hydration pack (don’t remember the make or type), but it was stolen. I’ve never really had a good pair of gloves. Does anyone have any ideas on the best type of pack and gloves to get. For the gloves, warmth isn’t a big deal because I mainly ride in the summer. FOr the pack, however, I need to be able to fit a reasonably large resavior in there for long rides as well as the essentials (e.g. tubes, multi-tool, levers, mini-pump, energy bars, rain-layer, first aid kit, light system, and a strobe light). I made a comedy diary. Do you think I should finish it:

11:30am: In bed. Can’t be bothered to go downstairs, even though I’m practically DYING of hunger right now. Besides, the goobies (aka my family) are downstairs, raving to Abba. That is how queer and utterly mental they are. So, to prevent goob disease, I must stay with my cosy duvet and not take off my rubber ducky jammies.
11:31am: “CHLOE, GET UP! NOW!” My dad shouted. How dare he shout at an awesome person like me, when I’m trying to get my beauty sleep. Shame on him. I snuggled up to my duvet. My dad is such a frog. And cog. And dog.
11:32am: Why have I got peanut butter and banana sandwiches in my bra?
11:33am: Molly my cat must have nicked them and snuck into my basket.
11:34am: I say basket, but its really a giant mountain of clothes, constantly growing in my bedroom.
11.40am: Gah. Stupid converses. Why can’t they make them easy to put on? Time for another family torture activity: a family bike ride. Why can’t my family be normal? Why does my insane dad wear knee-length yellow socks? And why does my mum have a lap-dancers closet?
11.50am: Pant pant. Ugh, why can’t they make hills easy to ride on.
“CHLOE! RUMBLE BUMBLE!” My dad shouted What, in the queer name of Elvis’s underpants does that mean? Knowing my Dad, he probably thinks it’s some sort of cool saying. I should keep a mental note to tell my Dad to NOT think.
12.30am: I think my toes are wonky. The big one is slightly slanted. Oh dear, I hope I don’t get athletes foot like Delilah. She’s my bestest friend. Although she has giant ears I “lubbie” her as my younger brother, Jordan says.
12:31am: Hahahahaha lubbie.
12:32am: I think I officially need a psychiatrist. Well, madness runs in the family. So does stupidness.
1.00am: Met up with the girls in Starbucks. That’s me, Delilah, Bridget, Jodie, Allix, Tamara and Kara. We like to call ourselves the “Cool Clique”. That is what we like to call ourselves.
“So, two days until St Sadness. Any ideas on how to fill in the crappy hours of boredom and torture?” Dellie said. Wow. I’m surprised she could say that all. Mind you, she has got a massive gob. I sipped my frappuccino (its some sort of icy beverage, don’t ask me too much, search it on wikipedia) and started thinking.
I know its a weird writing style, but its how I like to write.

What is the best BMX bike that is light weight and STRONG?

I have been using a crappy mountain kids bike because its light and I like it because it’s very easy to do tricks. I used to use my sisters DK Step Up but its too heavy and you can do any tricks. I have been looking at the DK 8 pack but I dont know if its the lightest and strongest bike on the market. I fall a lot because I usally try stuff that I shouldnt be trying but I do it anyways. The maximum that I would pay would be $$$300$$$. But I would like it to be 200 or less. If anybody could give me a link to Craigslist for Phoenix AZ for a bmx bike they reccomend to me that is light and affordable I will deffently add you to my favorites and you will be the best answer.

Would you say i was butch or am i being paranoid?

I’m 17 & i buy my clothes from girly shops like New Look & Mk1 but i usually just buy the hoodies, t-shirts & jeans not the skirts, strappy tops etc… cos i’m Skater/Emo. I wear a bit of make-up. I’ve been told that i’m pretty, i’m clean & i get attention from boys cos i’m quite girly in their company. However when i’m in my girl mates company i feel butch cos my interests vary to theirs – i like different music to them, heavy & indie rock. I like the same tv programmes as them like Big Brother, Desperate Housewives & Friends, but i also watch sci-fi’s & crime which they DEFINITELY do not watch, i like keeping fit, mountain biking, playing the PS2 & basically doing other stuff that they’d class as too boyish. I was comfortable with myself before i joined their group cos i used to hang around with a load of guys therefore making me feel a little bit feminine at least. Because of these differences i find myself acting more butch, it’s really getting me down & i feel self conscious. Help

Hi, I’m Sarah from SIDI. I’m going to guide you to the right fit. Let’s get started. First, let’s take a look at the SIDI sizing chart. Every brand can fit a bit differently, so let’s start from scratch. Find your standard shoe size on the chart then, go to your European size. This will tell you the proper length for SIDI shoe. The chart gets what we call a pro fit, which puts your toe right against the inside of the shoe. Go up a half size if you prefer a half thumbs width of room at the end of the shoe, especially if you are getting mountain/hike shoes and will be hiking/biking. Also go up a half size if you have a high arch but not a wide foot or if you know your feet swell. Roadies and tri-athletes frequently have this problem. Because one size does not fit best, SIDI shoes also come in different widths. If you normally buy wide shoes, get omega size and model. If you have a large orthotic or high instep, omega may work better. If you normally buy narrow shoe, get a narrow model. While all SIDI road and mountain bike shoes are compatible with all pedal models, let’s take a look to make sure your pedals match up to your new shoes. If you already have clip-less pedals and cleats, take a look at your current cleats. Are your cleats attached with 2, 3, or 4 bolts? For a 2 bolt cleat, you need a mountain bike shoe. If you have a 3 or 4 bolt cleat you need a road shoe. Once you get your properly sized SIDI’s, come on back for 3 more helpful how-to videos.

Changing gears on bike– problem?

OKay so i have had my bike for around a year now, not special or anything, not a BMX or Mountain bike just a normal kids bike from Halfords. Ever since the 1st time i rode it i’ve had trouble changing the gears. Every time i change it either the chain comes off, the chain gets stuck in between gears or it makes a noise. This bike was the last of its kind and was on the stand, so has no instructions, and had no warranty. We where told, when purchased, that we should come back in six weeks, but we live a while from there, so we never went back, so we have no warranty and it was never checked.(Our fault)
My dad, who isn’t good with bikes, noticed that one of the three wires running from the handle bars to the back where the gear wires are is loose. If i had the time to get it checked out professionally- i would, but i am going out on a long ride tomorrow, and i need it to be ride-able and changeable. Sorry for my nontechnical terms, but if anyone could help me understand what COULD be wrong, i would greatly appreciate it.

I’ve come to the realization that I’m becoming extremely over-weight. Got sober, hit 32, married, with kids and just ballooned over 90lbs in the last two years. I don’t have the time to put in the hours to lose the weight and with a family history of obesity, I’m scared my kids will have a fat dad.
I’ve always been fit, but, a little pudgy. In high school played football, power lifted, track (2-mile and 1 mile), ran cross- country. Worked out 3-5 hours a day. In adulthood before kids mountain biked 15-30 miles 4-6 day a week. Never was as ripped as I felt I should have been. Now at 5′8″ 245 I can’t do even simple routines without becoming winded.Diabetes and HBP run in the family and I’ve had a total knee reconstruct at age 15 so its already becoming arthritic.
So now with a comprehensive check-up coming in about a week, I’m curious about having a Lap Band implant. I’ve done a little research but I’d like to hear from some people who may have had the surgery. Did you starve? Hunger pains? Is this basically a passive weight loss system (your going to lose the weight with or without exercise)? Will I lose weight untill I have the ability to start doing vigorous workouts?
I realize that exercise is the only surefire way to keep weight off but I feel like I need help gettng to that point in life again, and I’m not going to be able to give more than 4-5 hours a week towards that goal. Doing my best to be realistic about this, set me straight if I’m off base please

Ok…..I never used to be like this,….i was usually really really girly, but I have unleashed my iner sk8r girl and my “dark side” LOL

I wear my hair out with a winter hat on, simple sk8r type clothes, and I snow board, sk8 board and all that. I dont surf though. I’m a straightup person, I basically speak my mind, which is a good and bad thing I spose. I am really really funny and I don’t like all those gooey love stories and all that. I play baseball, and play catch in the backyard with dad alot. I also play pool, mountain bike, and used to play ice hockey.

BMX riders out there, i need help!!!?

I’m looking for a low cost bmx and I went to walmart, im 6′1″ tall and 230lbs, I was looking at the freestyle bikes there and the ones I found seemed too “small”. I grew up in the 80s and had a bmx, but the bars on these bmx bikes in wally world seem alot smaller, and the seat don’t come up as far as I would like. Are these bikes like the “MONGOOSE” and the “NEXT” bikes for adults, or are they just kids bikes. I hate mountain bikes I think their too big and bulky and I don’t need all the gears.

Why would anyone prefer a mountain bike over a dirt bike?

This question has bugged me for a long time. Why would anyone prefer a mountain bike (pedal powered) over a dirt bike (motor powered)? I’m a very open minded person, and I am into most of the extreme sports out there. I ride dirt bikes, and I used to ride a mountain bike when I was a kid.

Anyways for the purpose of this question, I’d like to put the value of the bike aside, since I know some people can only afford a cheap mountain bike, and can’t afford a dirt bike. For the purpose of this question I’d like to assume you can afford both. Since I know there are alot of mountain bike enthusiasts that spend thousands of dollars for their high end mountain bikes, you could easily buy a dirt bike for the cost some people spend on their mountain bikes.

For me as a dirt biker, its just so hard to imagine why anybody who had a choice would ride a pedal powered mountain bike. You can cover so much more ground, go so much faster, ride terrain like sand and deep mud that mountain bikes can’t, go off way bigger jumps, and ride for much longer durations without getting tired. I can ride in the desert and zip right up a 40 foot sand dune and get air off the top, no way can you do that on a mountain bike.

What if on your mountain bike you do a downhill run, perhaps hit a couple jumps or whatever on the way down, well, once your down at the bottom your going to have a very tough time getting back up that hill, you’ll probably need a big rest. Well on a dirt bike I can go down that same hill, and zip right back up. I could probably do it 5 times in the amount of time it takes you to do it once.

Say you like cruising in the woods on a mountain bike, well thats fun and all, but on a dirt bike you can cover 10 times the ground, rather than just going through the woods, you can go through them, and to the top of every hill in sight, and back in the same amount of time.

Jumps are also fun on a mountain bike I’m sure, but for the same amount of effort it takes to maybe get a few feet of air, you can get way way more air on a dirt bike. And even though its way bigger air, to me I think its safer and more comfortable, because in the event of a close call or botched landing 1) I think the stationary foot pegs are easier to keep your feet on than a rotating crank 2) you can use throttle or brake in air if your leaning too far forward or back 3) much stronger suspension 4) the whole top is a big cushy seat, not going to land with the frame between the legs or slam tender areas into a dinky hard seat.

I could spend all day making up examples of why I think dirt bikes are better than mountain bikes, but I think you get the idea. I am not trying to put down mountain bikers in any way, I just really want to understand why anybody would like a mountain bike better. And what all the advantages could be. Who knows, if you can point out enough good reasons that I don’t know about, I might go and buy a mountain bike also, and ride both.

Can I fit disc brakes on my mountain bike wich was not designed fro them?

Ì have a pretty cheap mtb, I want to accumulate parts to eventually build a good bike. I would love the control and safety that discs offer. The frame i have does not fave mounts for a calliper per say, however it has 2 bolt holes which i think would normally be used for a carrier or maybe a mud gaurd. They’re pretty standard on bottom end bikes. 2 holes located above the rear dropouts on each side of the bike. Can i get adaptors or something to bolt into these and then provide the proper spacing for a disc brake calliper? Surely somebody has designed a solution to this problem?

Can someone explain biking etiquette to me?

I want to start riding my bike more, especially to the gym, but it’s a few miles away, and I don’t understand biking etiquette.

Am I supposed to ride a bike on the street, or sidewalk? What if it’s a mountain bike? A kid’s bike?

If I’m riding several miles, should I get a more “professional” bike? What are those and why?

If I ride on the sidewalk, what do I do with people around?
If I ride on the street, should I if I go too slow?

My brother is a huge moron, he doesn’t give a damn about anyone but his self, he just messes up the whole house and doesn’t life a finger to help out. he doesn’t do anything what-so-ever. he is always ordering my mom and dad around, get me this, get me that ect.. he has them wrapped around there fingers, all me and my sister do is clean, cook, babysit and basically are slaves, like when she is working I will babysit for 8 hours, she will come in and I would have cooked for the whole family, cleaned the whole house like mopped, done the dishes, swept.. cleaned the house from head to toes like sometimes it takes 2 hours, then I get my brothers homework done with him, and everything. this is a daily thing, me and my sister practically run this house.. then this christmas she buys me and my sister a perfume and ipod each, I am very grateful for it and everything, but like thats all we got…
and guess what she got my brother an blackberry phone, slim playstation 3 160gb, ipod touch 16gb, loads of clothes, 3 ps3 games, 2 pairs of kicker boots, loads of clothes, and boys perfumes.
I mean woahh every christmas she spends like $200 on us and $600 + on him, i mean after all me and my sister do we don’t even got allowance which just isn’t fair, as we deserve it we pull our weight around the house, my brother is just rude and spoilt. he doesn’t even no how to pick up a sock. I feel like she is and was very hard on us growing up like we cooked our own food at 11 and he doesn’t even no how to make cereal, we were cleaning our own rooms from age 8 he doesn’t even clean his and never has in his life. and last christmas my sister just got a picture and my brother got a BMX mountain bike, 7 ps3 games, and a psp with loads of games. I mean every year she makes his birthday and christmas memorable and ours nothing special. and I do appreciate the little I get compare to him because in some countries they get nothing.
I just feel like she really favors him, I’m kinda sick and tired of it to be honest… I feel bad for me and my sister at the end of the day, she is 16, I’m 17 his 12… and please don’t say it’s because his the youngest were all her kids, age doesn’t mean anything.

I have a 20inch folding bike with the diameter of the tyres just under 2 cm. The back tyre was worn out nearly running on just the inner tube and when I went over a rock today it just blew. As I like going offroad, can I get a 20inch mountain bike tyre for replacement?(ie, the type seen on mountain bikes for kids?) Thanks.
